Robert J. Gustavson, Jr.

Head of School at Fay School

During the course of his career, Rob Gustavson has worked as a teacher, coach, and administrator at independent schools throughout the United States. He began teaching middle school English and coaching soccer, ice hockey, and baseball, then served in positions as head of middle school and assistant head of school before coming to Fay in 2008. He previously worked at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Day School, St. Mark’s School of Texas, The Hockaday School, McDonogh School, and The Fenn School.

In his role as Head of School, Rob is Fay’s educational and institutional leader. He works closely with the administrative team to carry out Fay's mission by overseeing implementation of the educational program, admission, secondary school counseling, financial management and operations, maintenance of buildings and grounds, hiring and staffing, marketing and public relations, and institutional advancement. In partnership with the Board of Trustees, Rob develops strategic initiatives and ensures ongoing progress and improvement. He currently serves on the Membership Committee of the Association of Independent Schools in New England.

Rob is a graduate of New Canaan Country School, Phillips Exeter Academy, and the University of Virginia. He and his wife Carol live on campus. Their youngest son attended Fay for eight years, graduated from Deerfield Academy, and now attends Middlebury College. Their middle son graduated from Fay, Berkshire School, and Michigan State University and is currently pursuing a Master of Teaching degree at the University of Virginia. Their daughter graduated from Deerfield Academy, Stanford University, and Northwestern University and works as an early elementary teacher.
