Andrea Sperling

Board Member at Film Independent

In her career as an independent film producer, Andrea Sperling has over thirty independent feature films under her belt. She produced her first feature at the age of 21 and helped foster the careers of critically-acclaimed filmmakers such as Gregg Araki (The Doom Generation), David Ayer (Harsh Times), Ry Russo-Young (Nobody Walks), Jamie Babbit (But I’m a Cheerleader), Angela Robinson (Professor Marston & the Wonder Women), James Ponsoldt (Smashed) and Drake Doremus (Like Crazy). In 2014, Sperling was inducted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and made her first foray into television, executive producing Jill Soloway’s groundbreaking series Transparent, which garnered 21 Emmy Nominations, 8 Emmy Wins and 2 Golden Globes in its five seasons. Together Sperling and Soloway formed Topple, a production company dedicated to bringing unique female and queer-centric stories to the screen. Under Topple’s exclusive television deal at Amazon, Sperling went on to executive produce Jill Soloway and Sarah Gubbin’s I Love Dick, an adaptation of Chris Kraus’s cult feminist novel of the same name, as well as Marja Lewis-Ryan’s pilot College. While Sperling and Soloway continue to develop new television at Amazon under the Topple banner, they also have a booming feature slate with projects set up at Fox Searchlight, MakeReady, Lionsgate, Millenium, Universal, Blumhouse, Amazon and Participant. Sperling has been nominated by Film Independent for a Spirit Award in producing achievement twice and is the recipient of career achievement awards at the San Francisco, Torino, Vienna and Miami LGBTQ+ Film Festivals. In 2012, Sperling produced two films in competition at Sundance and was awarded the Special Jury Prize for Outstanding Producing Achievement — the only time in Sundance history that a producer has been awarded a Special Jury Prize.
