Thomas De Mallet Burgess

Thomas de Mallet Burgess serves as the Artistic Director of Opera at the Finnish National Opera and Ballet since August 2023. With extensive experience in opera direction, Thomas has held the position of General Director at New Zealand Opera from July 2018 to June 2023, focusing on strategic growth and audience engagement. As a freelance director since 1989, Thomas has collaborated with prestigious institutions such as the Canadian Opera Company and The Royal Opera House Covent Garden. Notably, Thomas founded and directed Lost & Found Opera, recognized for innovative productions in unconventional spaces. Additional roles include serving as Cultural Coordinator for the City of Joondalup and CEO of TEAM Theatre Company in Ireland, along with teaching opera at the University of Cincinnati. Academic credentials include BA and MA degrees in Philosophy and Modern Languages from the University of Oxford.
