Nick Michiels

Principal Investigator at Flanders Make

Nick Michiels has a diverse work experience in the field of research and academia. Nick started their career as a PHD Student at Hasselt University in September 2011 and completed it in December 2016. During this time, they were also involved in EU and Flemish research projects focusing on computer graphics and computer vision. Nick then joined imec in December 2016 as a Senior Researcher, where they worked on the analysis and classification of flow cytometry data until April 2020. In 2019, they started working as a Principal Investigator at Flanders Make. In their current role as an Assistent-professor at Hasselt University, which they started in October 2022, their research interests include relighting and inverse rendering algorithms, light field rendering for AR/VR, and synthetic data generation for machine learning.

Nick Michiels completed their education at various institutions. Nick earned a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science at UHasselt from 2006 to 2009. Nick then pursued a Master's degree in Computer Science with a specialization in Multimedia at UHasselt from 2009 to 2011. Subsequently, they obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Computer Science from UHasselt, which they completed from 2011 to 2016. Prior to their university studies, Nick attended Sint-Jan Berchmanscollege from 2000 to 2006, where they completed their secondary education in the field of Math with a focus on Wetenschappen-Wiskunde (8 uur).
