Rian Mc Donnell started their work experience in 2017 as an Undergraduate Researcher at UC Berkeley, where they focused on the creation and manipulation of Graphene and other 2D materials. They then worked as a Research Intern at Siemens in 2018, where they developed a virtual robotics testing platform for industrial testing purposes. In 2019, Rian became a Capstone Researcher at UL. Later in the same year, they co-founded DeLive, a company that delivers AEDs using drones to improve cardiac arrest victim survival rates. Finally, in 2019, Rian founded their own company called FloVision Solutions, which aims to reduce waste and increase food yield for food processors and providers by integrating compact sensors.

From 2008 to 2014, Rian attended Dundalk Grammar School and obtained a High School Leaving Certificate.
In 2014, Rian enrolled at Trinity College Dublin and pursued a Bachelor of Engineering (BE) degree in Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering. This program lasted until 2018.
During the academic year of 2017 to 2018, Rian studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley.
In 2018, Rian returned to Trinity College Dublin for a Master of Engineering (MEng) degree in Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering, which was completed in 2019.
From 2019 to 2020, Rian attended the University of Notre Dame, where they pursued a Master of Science (MS) degree in the Engineering, Science & Technology Entrepreneurship Excellence Masters Program.
In addition to their formal education, Rian obtained the European Computer Driving License (ECDL) certification in March 2012. The institution that granted this certification is unknown.
