Chief Innovation Scientist at Fondazione Bruno Kessler - FBK

Raffaele Giaffreda has a diverse work experience in the field of IoT and innovation. Raffaele currently serves as the Chief IoT Scientist at Fondazione Bruno Kessler - FBK, a position they have held since 2016. In addition to their role at FBK, Giaffreda is also the Chief Innovation Officer at TESSA Agritech srl, where they started in 2020 and will continue until 2023.

Giaffreda has also been involved in various projects and collaborations in the field of IoT. Raffaele worked as the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE IoT eNewsletter from 2014 to 2022, and they have served as a Reviewer for EU Horizon Europe collaborative project proposals since 2021. Giaffreda was also the Principal Investigator of the SAPIENCE EIT Climate KIC - Pathfinder Project from 2020 to 2021.

Earlier in their career, Giaffreda was involved in various research activities at CREATE-NET, where they held positions such as Head of Smart IoT research from 2013 to 2016, Head of Networks and Services Research from 2009 to 2013, and Area Head for OSCO Research Group from 2008 to 2009.

Additionally, Giaffreda served as the iCore Project Coordinator for the EU FP7 project on IoT from 2011 to 2014. In this role, they worked on empowering the Internet of Things with cognitive technologies.

In 2016, Giaffreda also had a five-week secondment at UC Irvine, where they focused on advanced IoT research and technology transfer studies. This experience involved interactions with various stakeholders and validation of IoT platforms and revenue generation models.

Raffaele Giaffreda earned a MSc in Telecoms Engineering from UCL between 1998 and 2000. Prior to that, they studied Electronic Engineering with a focus on Optical Telecommunication Systems at Politecnico di Torino from 1989 to 1995. In 1993 and 1994, they were an Erasmus Student at Télecom Paris, specializing in Optical Telecommunication Systems.
