Dr. Escolar's earlier experiences include working at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as the Director of the Program for Neurodevelopmental Function in Rare Disorders from July 2000 to July 2011, and as a Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrician Faculty at Duke University Medical Center from 1998 to October 2000.

Maria L Escolar, MD, MS obtained their MD and Surgery degree from Escuela Colombiana de Medicina in 1986. Maria L then pursued a Master of Science (M.S.) in Human Nutrition from Columbia University, completing it in 1989. Maria L continued their education at Joan & Sanford I. Weill Medical College of Cornell University, where they completed their residency and fellowship in General Pediatrics, with a specialization in Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, from 1990 to 1995. Additionally, they obtained another Master of Science (MS) in Human Nutrition from Columbia University at an unspecified time.
