Guy Stéphan turned to coaching at the age of 31. First in a club. Then, at the request of Aimé Jacquet, he joined the National Technical Directorate from August 15, 1998 to the end of 2002. He was then responsible for the training of executives and the team of France U18 and A 'in parallel, before being promoted assistant to national coach Roger Lemerre at the start of 2000. Since 2009, Guy Stéphan second Didier Deschamps whom he knew during Euro 2000, when he was then assistant by Roger Lemerre. The duo worked for three years in Marseille before taking over the France team.
