Salua J. Smith has an extensive work experience in various organizations and institutions. Salua J. started their career as the Honorary Consul of Brazil for the Boston & New England Region in 1985, representing the Brazilian Government. In 1980, they became the Board Chair of the Boston Foundation for Education & Medicine. In 1990, they joined Accion International as a member of the President's Council.

In 1999, Salua joined the Massachusetts General Hospital, where they served as a member of the Leadership Council Board and the Psychiatric and Psychopharmacology Councils. Salua J. continued their involvement with the hospital until the present.

In 2002, Salua became part of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, where they held multiple roles. Salua J. served as an Advisory Board Member and a member of the Round Table Nutrition Counsel.

Salua also worked as a member of the Board of Advisors for the Harvard AIDS Global Initiative, beginning in 2005.

In 2013, they joined the National Museum of Women in the Arts, serving on the council. The same year, they also entered a position at the Hadassah Hospital in the Development department.

Most recently, in 2014, Salua became the Director of From the Top organization.
