Inaugurated in June 2003, the hospital, initially called the Brazilian Oncology Center, was strategically positioned on the banks of the BR 116, in the municipality of Muriaé, in the Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais, hometown of deputy Lael Varella and his son Cristiano, patron of the institution. The growth and representativeness of the hospital for the region was a consequence.


The Brazilian Oncology Center was renamed Hospital do Câncer de Muriaé, by determination of the Advisory Board of the Cristiano Varella Foundation. In season, the Hospital do Câncer de Muriaé already had all the physical resources needed for outpatient and inpatient care, support for diagnosis and therapies, fully equipped with the most modern and advanced imported diagnostic and treatment devices, including a Linear Accelerator, providing thus the performance of the first radiosurgery and stereotaxic surgery.
