S. Yvette Carter has a diverse work experience spanning over two decades. S. Yvette began their career as an Intern at the East Gainesville Development Corporation in 2000, where they assisted the Program Manager in developing recruitment seminars for WAGES participants. S. Yvette also assisted the Executive Director in community affairs.
In 1998, Carter joined Nationwide Insurance and worked as a Claims Call Center Customer Representative and Team Lead. In this role, they served as the first point of contact for customers, initiating initial claims reports and providing directions to policyholders, claimants, agents, and others. S. Yvette was consistently recognized for outstanding quality and customer service. Additionally, they were a board member of the Associate Diversity Committee and the VOICES Employee Activities Committee, which focused on raising awareness and engagement in diversity and inclusion, as well as organizing employee volunteerism in local non-profit organizations/events.
Carter progressed to become a Casualty Claims/Senior Medical Claims Representative at Nationwide Insurance. In this role, they determined coverage, medical necessity, and appropriateness of charges related to injury and liability claims. S. Yvette paid claims accurately based on policy provisions, state mandates, and fee schedules. S. Yvette received acclaim for their exemplary customer service, building rapport easily with customers. S. Yvette was also a board member of the Associate Diversity Committee.
From 2007 to 2012, Carter served as a Supervisor of Claims Support at Nationwide Insurance. S. Yvette fostered and enhanced business partnerships between Claims professionals and Claims Support staff. S. Yvette provided direct supervision and administrative leadership to associates responsible for moderately complex clerical and administrative functions. S. Yvette played key roles in various employee resource groups and business unit councils, including AWARE, Women-EMPOWERED Florida Women's Circle, and the Diversity and Inclusion Business Unit Council.
Carter transitioned to Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) in 2012, where they held multiple positions. From 2012 to 2014, they worked as a Community Relations Coordinator. In this role, they managed all of GRU's community relations programs and customer outreach initiatives. S. Yvette developed and evaluated methods of communication, fostered strategic partnerships with community and civic organizations, and acted as an ambassador for GRU at local events and meetings.
From 2014 to 2019, Carter worked as a Community and Government Relations Officer at GRU. In this role, they maintained a positive working relationship with the General Manager and City Commission, acting as a strategic partner. S. Yvette facilitated two-way communication between GRU and the community and addressed questions and concerns as an ombudsman.
Most recently, Carter held the position of Chief Inclusion Officer at GRU, starting in August 2019. In this leadership role, they focused on GRU's intercultural competence, inclusion, and diversity. S. Yvette developed and executed the GRU inclusion and diversity strategy, proposed strategies and initiatives related to these areas, and provided key leadership in all matters concerning GRU's intercultural competence.

S. Yvette Carter completed their Bachelor of Science degree in Family, Youth, and Community Sciences at the University of Florida in 2006.
