Irene Hernández

Founder & CEO at Gataca

Irene Hernández has a wealth of work experience in engineering, blockchain technology, and digital business. Irene began their career in 2006 as an R&D Engineer at Siemens AG, where they developed an indoor positioning platform leveraging patented, Wi-Fi based technologies. In 2007, they moved to Airbus Group as a Systems Engineer, delivering engineering support to the Airbus Military assembly factory in Seville and designing manufacturing procedures for development aircrafts. In 2008, they became a Systems Engineer at Telefónica Research & Development. In 2010, they joined Telefónica Business Solutions as Global Design Manager and Global Bid Manager, guiding teams of 15+ in the U.S. In 2017, they became a Blockchain researcher and Decentralized Grids at the MIT Media Lab, where they directed a Solar Microgrid Financing project. In 2018, they founded and became the CEO of Gataca, an MIT-born cybersecurity company that offers decentralized digital identity technology. Finally, in 2020, they became an Adjunct Professor - Master in Blockchain and its Business Applications at Three Points The School for Digital Business.

Irene Hernández completed their Telecommunications Engineering Masters from the Universidad de Zaragoza in 2006. Irene then went on to do a Part-time MBA in Aerospace from the Escuela de Organización Industrial in 2007-2008. After that, they completed a Postgraduate in Telecommunication Business from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in 2012-2013. In 2016-2018, they completed their Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the MIT Sloan School of Management. Additionally, they have obtained a Certified Information Privacy Professional/Europe (CIPP/E) from The International Association of Privacy Professionals in November 2018 and an Ethereum Developer Certificate of Proficiency from ConsenSys Academy in February 2019.
