Jay Markwalter currently serves as the Statewide Tourism Director for Explore Georgia, the tourism division of the Georgia Department of Economic Development, since January 2024. Prior to this role, Markwalter was the Executive Director of the Georgia Association of Convention & Visitors Bureaus from April 2018 to December 2023 and the Director of Sales at the Augusta Convention & Visitors Bureau between September 2014 and March 2018. Markwalter’s earlier experience includes serving as the Director of Marketing Communications and Tourism Director for the Dahlonega-Lumpkin County Chamber & Visitors Bureau from July 2011 to September 2014, and as Executive Director for the Lawrenceville Tourism & Trade Association and Downtown Development Authority from May 2004 to July 2011. Markwalter holds a BBA in Marketing from the University of Georgia and a TMP certification in Travel & Tourism from the Southeast Tourism Society.

The Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) is the state’s sales and marketing arm, the lead agency for attracting new business investment, encouraging the expansion of existing industry and small businesses, align workforce education and training with in-demand jobs, locating new markets for Georgia products, attracting tourists to Georgia, and promoting the state as a destination for arts and location for film, music and digital entertainment projects, as well as planning and mobilizing state resources for economic development.
