At the German International School Portland we have a knack for teaching children a second language. Not only do our students learn a second language, they are immersed in German culture through music, art, books and conversation with everyone around them. In return, they have the opportunity to become better listeners, more flexible in their thinking and more open to other languages and cultures.

GIS provides an excellent educational experience that fosters cross-cultural understanding, giving our children the tools and perspectives needed to actively participate as citizens in a global community. Our students develop and maintain fluency in both the German and English languages.

The Educational Staff at the German International School Portland are dedicated to fostering a bilingual and multicultural learning environment. This diverse team includes the Head Of School, who oversees all academic programs; Teacher Assistants, who support classroom activities; an Early Learning Social-emotional Learning Specialist, who addresses the emotional and social needs of younger students; a Librarian, who manages resources and encourages a love for reading; a German Teacher For the Fluent Teen Program, who guides advanced German learners; and a Teacher of English for Grades 4 & 5, who ensures fluency in English. Together, they enable students to excel academically while embracing cultural competencies and lifelong learning.
