Kameryn Sampson

Deputy Director at Girls Empowerment Network

Education:

Bachelor of Science in Child and Family Studies and double minor in Women & Gender Studies and Psychology from Louisiana State University

Master of Social Work with concentration in Macro Social Work at the University of Houston

Experience: Kameryn is originally from LaPlace, Louisiana and a proud graduate of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. It was there that her passion for community service and supporting women and girls came alive. However, Kameryn has a long tenure from before joining the organization in 2018 of direct service experience with youth. During her undergraduate education, she served in executive leadership for various organizations such as Volunteer LSU, the Minority Women’s Movement, and LSU Service Breaks. Kameryn moved to Houston, Texas in the fall of 2018 to purse her master's degree in Social Work at the University of Houston Main Campus and began her time with Girls Empowerment Network as a part-time Program Coordinator, delivering our signature curriculum in schools in the Greater Houston region. Within a year, Kameryn fell deeply in love with our mission and culture and made a commitment to deepening her roots with the organization. Within a year (2019), she transitioned into a full-time Program Coordinator role, then a Program Manager in 2021, then Program Director in 2022, and then Interim Deputy Director in January of 2024. Kameryn is now a licensed master level social worker in the state of Texas and has a deep commitment to expanding the understanding of “macro social work” to the greater social work community. Kameryn loves spending time with her two small children, supporting birthing people as a certified birth and postpartum doula, watching HGTV with her spouse, skincare routines, summer fun (even though she was born in December), and eating delicious Louisiana cuisine.

What I love about Girls Empowerment Network: What I really love about us is how dedicated we are to promoting self efficacy in girls, as well as how we maintain our culture in all that we do.

Self efficacy truly does set us apart from other programs, and helping girls recognize that they truly have the ability to change the world is so beautiful to me. It is of course important for girls to recognize their worth within their self esteem, but being able to take it that step further into their abilities is what is going to make these girls advance into leadership in all aspects of their world. Women and girls building their self efficacy is what is going to make this world change.

In regards to the culture here, it is so empowering to me to see that what we are facilitating is not only being demonstrated to the girls, but is also demonstrated simply between our interactions with our coworkers, as well as school champions, parents, and so on. You do not find many places of work that are truly dedicated to this, and that makes me feel so privileged to be afforded the opportunity to work with an organization like this.
