Nate Miller works closely with the engineering team to develop Global Fishing Watch’s open-source data products, including data on vessel encounters, loitering, anchorages and port visits, and forced labor risk. He also works closely with the director of research to manage the broader research team, and supports the work of their research partners.
Nate has a background in marine biology, with more than 15 years working as a research scientist with an emphasis on the response of marine organisms to environmental changes such as temperature, acidification and hypoxia. His experiences included several seasons in Antarctica. Nate earned a doctorate in zoology and ecology, evolutionary biology and behavior, and a master’s degree in data science, and served as an adjunct biology faculty member at San Francisco State University. Nate is an avid backpacker and cyclist.
