Rollan Geronimo

Rollan Geronimo is a fisheries analyst with a focus on Asia. He directly supports the research and transparency teams by initiating innovative use of GFW spatial data or responding to requests for analyses from the wider stakeholder community, including governments, regional fisheries management organizations, academic institutions, NGOs, and private partners. Rollan brings to the team his in-depth knowledge on Asian fisheries, tropical marine ecosystems, geospatial statistics, and use of satellites for fisheries monitoring.

Rollan has worked on various projects on marine conservation and fisheries in the Philippines. He previously served as a knowledge management and illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing specialist for the USAID-funded Fish Right program. He has more than 15 years of experience in marine conservation and fisheries management, applying analytics to marine reserve design, ecosystem modeling, fisheries mapping, and climate change projections. He has worked with various local and international organizations, including the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, World Bank, USAID and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Rollan has been supporting the Philippine government in the use of nighttime satellite data for fisheries management since 2015. His work on mapping fishing grounds using visible infrared imaging satellite data was recognized as one of the outstanding publications in the Philippines on fisheries and agriculture in 2020. He earned his master of science in marine science from the University of the Philippines and is currently completing his doctorate in geography at the University of Hawaii in Manoa. When not playing with his three kids, Rollan explores the world of hydroponics and woodworking.
