Anand Mehta

Dr. Mehta is SmartState Endowed Chair of Proteomic Biomarkers and Professor, Medical University of South Carolina. He received his graduate degree in Biochemistry from the University of Oxford under the supervision of Professor Raymond Dwek and Noble Laureate Baruch Blumberg. While a student at the University of Oxford, Dr. Mehta examined methods by which viruses form and developed methods to inhibit them. Several compounds that Dr. Mehta developed are currently under commercial development as antivirals for the treatment of Dengue, Influenza, Ebola, and Marburg Virus. As the Bruce Witte Scholar of the Hepatitis B Foundation, Dr. Mehta’s laboratory focused on developing diagnostic tools and treatments for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Dr. Mehta developed a method referred to as glycoproteomics to identify biomarkers of HCC. Dr. Mehta is a member of the National Cancer Institute’s Alliance of Glycobiologists for Cancer Detection and the Early Detection Research Network. Funding for his laboratory is from the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.
