William Buick

Jockey at Godolphin

William Buick became a retained Godolphin jockey in January 2015 and rides as first jockey for trainer Charlie Appleby.

Born in Norway, he grew up in an equestrian family as his father was a trainer.

William’s first professional race was in August 2006 and he celebrated his first victory the following month at Salisbury.

In 2008, he was crowned joint Champion Apprentice in Great Britain with 50 winners. He has ridden all over the world, from Dubai to Japan and America, and had his first G1 success for Godolphin on Sajjhaa, who took the Jebel Hatta at Meydan in 2013.

William partnered Charming Thought to a thrilling victory in the G1 Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket in October 2014, providing Charlie Appleby with a first G1 victory in the UK in the process.

He landed the Dubai World Cup in March 2015, steering the Saeed bin Suroor-trained Prince Bishop to victory at Meydan.

G1 success continued in 2015 when he guided Jack Hobbs to victory in the Irish Derby for Godolphin and trainer John Gosden.

2016 saw more wins at the highest level for William, who was aboard Hawkbill in the Eclipse at Sandown in July, and on Ribchester when he won the Jacques le Marois at Deauville the following month.

William had a hugely successful 2018, and his lifelong dream of winning the G1 Derby at Epsom was realised in emphatic style aboard the Charlie Appleby-trained Masar when he recorded a dominant victory in the highly coveted British Classic.

He followed that up 17 days later with a thrilling win aboard Blue Point in the G1 King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot, providing Godolphin with their first win in the race.
