The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District (District) operates the Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Transit and Golden Gate Ferry. It is a special district of the State of California formed in 1928 to build and operate the Golden Gate Bridge. It is a public agency. The District is comprised of San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma, Napa counties and portions of Del Norte and Mendocino counties. The District expanded its mission in 1970 when it began the operation of Golden Gate Ferry and the operation of Golden Gate Transit regional bus service in 1972
