Karen Cosby

Karen is a member of the Moore Foundation's Patient Care Program as a program director for the Diagnostic Excellence Initiative.

Karen comes to the foundation from Chicago after a 30-year career in emergency medicine – 28 of them at Cook County Hospital and Rush Medical College. She was a core academic faculty member in emergency medicine and focused her teaching and leadership roles in diagnosis, clinical reasoning, and decision-making. In that role, she oversaw the Mortality and Morbidity Conference series and led the quality, safety, and clinical oversight. She is also an early leader in point-of-care ultrasound and helped originate and lead the Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Division and Ultrasound Fellowship. Karen is one of the founding members of the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine where she helped establish a fellowship in diagnostic excellence. She has edited 4 books: two textbooks for an emergency ultrasound, one on patient safety for emergency medicine, and most recently, a book on diagnosis (Diagnosis: Interpreting the Shadows).

Karen obtained a B.A. from Northwestern University in biochemistry and molecular biology and an M.D. from Indiana University. She trained in emergency medicine at Jacobi/Albert Einstein in New York.
