Alvin Shi

Senior Bioinformatics Data Scientist at GRAIL

Alvin Shi has a strong background in bioinformatics, data science, and computational biology. Alvin is currently working as a Bioinformatics and Data Scientist at GRAIL, Inc. Prior to this, Alvin worked as a Graduate Research Assistant at MIT, where they focused on cancer genomics, epigenomics, immunogenomics, Bayesian statistics, and machine learning. As a PhD Student Intern at Takeda, they gained experience in pharmaceutical research. Alvin also worked as a Bioinformatics Analyst at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where they developed analysis pipelines for high-throughput sequencing data and microarray data. Alvin started their career as an Undergraduate Research Assistant at Duke University, conducting research on C. elegans development and pigmentation genetics in Drosophila. Additionally, Alvin has interned at the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, where they designed statistical models and analyzed budget forecasts for healthcare programs. Alvin also had a summer internship at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute. Alvin has a strong academic background and was supported by a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship during their time at MIT.

Alvin Shi pursued their education in a systematic manner, starting with their enrollment at the Alabama School of Fine Arts from 2004 to 2009. After completing this stage, they moved on to Duke University, where they pursued a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree from 2009 to 2013. Finally, they attended the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 2015 to 2021, where they attained a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Computational and Systems Biology.
