Virgílio Afonso

Virgílio Afonso has extensive work experience in the insurance and financial industry. Virgílio currently holds the position of Head of Actuarial at Grupo Ageas Portugal since November 2022, where they are responsible for overseeing actuarial operations. Prior to this, they served as the IFRS 17 Technical Director for the company starting in March 2021. Before joining Grupo Ageas, Virgílio worked at Mercer as Operations Leader from January 2020 to March 2021. Virgílio also served as a Senior Manager at KPMG from May 2018 to January 2020.

In their earlier career, Virgílio held various roles at MetLife, including Product Development Manager, Head of Projections - EMEA, Iberian Valuation Manager & Senior Valuation Actuary in MetLife Ireland, and Valuation Manager & Senior Actuary. Virgílio'stenure at MetLife spanned from November 2012 to January 2020. Prior to joining MetLife, Virgílio worked as the Pension Funds & Actuarial Valuation Manager at MetLife Portugal from October 2011 to November 2012.

Before their tenure at MetLife, Virgílio served as the Actuarial Valuation Manager at Victoria Seguros for nearly a decade, from August 2002 to September 2011. Virgílio also gained experience at ERGO Versicherungsgruppe AG as an Actuary for a brief period in 2007 and Deutsche Bank as an Actuary from July 2001 to July 2002. Virgílio started their career with an actuary internship at BPI Pensões from October 2000 to March 2001.

Virgílio Afonso attended Universidade Nova de Lisboa from 1993 to 1999, where they obtained a degree in Actuarial Mathematics.
