Ernesto Ríos Patrón has a diverse work experience spanning various roles and companies. Starting in 1992, Ernesto worked as a Process Engineer at Bufete Industrial Diseños y Proyectos. Ernesto then moved on to McKinsey and Company Sucursal México as an Associate Consultant from 2000 to 2002. Ernesto joined Instituto Mexicano del Petróleo in 2002, where they held several positions including Corporate Strategic Planning Manager, Special Projects Coordinator, and Chief Planning Officer. In 2010, they joined Petróleos Mexicanos as the Temporary Downstream Chief Engineering Officer and later became the Corporate Vice President for Project Development. From 2015 to 2019, Ernesto served as the Chief Executive Officer at Instituto Mexicano del Petróleo, where they successfully opened new sources of income amidst a fall in oil prices. Currently, Ernesto is the Chief Engineering Officer at Grupo México, a position they assumed in 2019.

Ernesto Ríos Patrón earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México from 1988 to 1992. Ernesto then pursued a Master of Science degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, completing it from 1995 to 1997. Following that, they continued their studies at the same university and obtained a Doctor of Philosophy - PhD in Ingeniería Química from 1997 to 1999.
