Hannah Baranes

Hannah joined GMRI in 2022, where she works alongside Dr. Dave Reidmiller in the Climate Center. Hannah’s goal is to support the development of localized flood projections that can be used for community-scale planning along Maine’s open coast and estuaries. She uses statistical techniques to estimate flood hazard in areas where there are multiple physical drivers of flooding, such as sea level rise, tides, storm surge, and river flow.

Prior GMRI, Hannah received her B.A. in Earth Sciences from Dartmouth College and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Geosciences from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Broadly, Hannah’s graduate work aimed to understand the dynamic processes that shape the coastal environment. She has published on topics ranging from incorporating tides into flood hazard statistics, to understanding the processes that supply salt marshes with the mineral sediment they need to survive. During graduate school, Hannah also developed flood projections and co-authored a climate projections report for the City of Boston as a part of the Greater Boston Research Advisory Group.
