Prof. Dr. J. D. Schmitto has extensive work experience in the field of cardiothoracic surgery. Prof. Dr. J. D. began their career in 2002 as a Surgery Resident at Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, where they worked until 2009. From 2009 to 2010, they served as a Fellow at Brigham and Women´s Hospital, affiliated with Harvard Medical School. In 2011, they joined Hannover Medical School as a Staff Cardiothoracic Surgeon and Oberarzt, specializing in heart surgery. Prof. Dr. J. D. also became the Director of the Cardiac Assist Device + Cardiac Transplantation Program at Hannover Medical School in 2012.

Prof. Dr. J. D. Schmitto, MD, PhD, MBA, FRCS(Glasg) FACS completed their Bachelor's degree in Medicine at the University of Muenster, Muenster, Germany. Prof. Dr. J. D. attended this institution from 1996 to 2002, graduating from the Muenster Medical School. After obtaining their medical degree, Prof. Dr. Schmitto furthered their education by obtaining a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Hannover and Neu-Ulm. Prof. Dr. J. D. pursued this degree from 2011 to 2013.
