Kenji Kusaka

Director, Energy Procurement at Hawaiian Electric

Kenji Kusaka has a diverse work experience spanning several decades. Kenji began their career at Mobil Chemical Company as a Process Engineer, where they were responsible for production control and implementing maintenance and quality assurance programs. Kenji later transitioned to the role of Project Engineer, overseeing various projects.

In 1985, Kenji joined Hawaiian Electric Company as a Betterment Engineer, supervising the construction of wastewater treatment facilities and supporting heat rate testing at power plants. Kenji went on to serve as Station Engineer and then as Technical Superintendent, before being promoted to Project Manager. In this role, they managed the planning, design, and construction of new generating units and power supply projects. Kenji successfully completed projects on Maui, Molokai, Lanai, and acquired a new generation site in central Maui.

Kenji's last known role at Hawaiian Electric Company was Director of Energy Procurement. Kenji provided supervision and policy direction to staff in designing and implementing programs and procedures for the purchase of power from independent power producers using various procurement mechanisms.

Kenji Kusaka obtained a Master's degree in Industrial Administration from Purdue University, which they pursued from 1975 to 1976. Prior to that, they completed their Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) at Purdue University, from 1971 to 1975. Kenji also holds a certification as a Professional Engineer from the State of Hawaii, obtained in 1994.
