Chris Esguerra, MD, MBA has an extensive work experience in the healthcare industry. Chris is currently serving as the Chief Medical Officer at Health Plan of San Mateo (HPSM), where they lead strategic efforts focusing on integrating health and social care, driving towards healthy and equitable outcomes, and overall resource stewardship.

Prior to HPSM, Chris worked as a Physician Entrepreneur and Advisor, promoting healthcare transformation and integrating social needs care into healthcare delivery for holistic health. Chris also has expertise in Medicare, Medicaid, strategy, contracting, value-based payment models, policy, startups, interoperability, due diligence, and portfolio management.

In addition to their roles at HPSM and as a Physician Entrepreneur and Advisor, Chris has served as an Advisor at Carenodes, a Board Member at Project Angel Food, and a Strategic Advisor at Lionrock Recovery and Altopax.

Chris also worked as a Senior Medical Director at Blue Shield of California, focusing on Medicaid, Medicare, and Dually Eligible covered individuals. Chris was a Member of the Advisory Panel for the North Carolina Healthy Opportunities Pilot Service Fee Schedule and Committee Member at the National Academy of Sciences.

Furthermore, Chris was an Advisor at Periscope, where they partnered with payers, health systems, and others to improve outcomes and minimize risk in home healthcare services.

Chris Esguerra, MD, MBA, obtained a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of Southern California between 1997 and 2001. From 2001 to 2005, they attended the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California and earned a Medical Doctorate degree. Continuing their education, they pursued a Master of Business Administration degree with a concentration in Healthcare Management at the Isenberg School of Management, UMass Amherst from 2011 to 2012.

In addition to their academic achievements, Dr. Chris Esguerra has obtained two additional certifications. In July 2013, they received certification in Health Care Quality and Management from the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians. Prior to this, in October 2010, they acquired certification in Psychiatry from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
