Joel Young has a diverse work experience spanning several industries. Joel is currently the CTO and Founder of Hireguide, a role they have held since July 2021. Joel is also an Advisor for Stealth Data Science Infra, starting in April 2021.

In 2021, Joel served on the Program Committee for USENIX SRECon at USENIX Association, from June to October.

Joel has a strong background in engineering at LinkedIn, where they held various positions from 2014 to 2021. Joel was the Director of Engineering for Assessments, leading the development of assessments capability. Joel also served as the Director of Engineering for Machine Inference, leading the Machine Inference Infrastructure team and contributing to the Productive Machine Learning initiative. Prior to their industry roles, Joel had an extensive career in academia. Joel was an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the Naval Postgraduate School, teaching various computer science courses and advising research in machine learning and digital forensics. Joel also served as a Military Assistant Professor in computer science and continued teaching and advising research.

Before their academic career, Joel served in the United States Air Force from 1991 to 2012. Joel held various positions, including Cyberspace Operation Officer, Deputy Commander, and Flight Commander.

Joel also briefly served as the J6: Director of Communications for the Iraq Assistance Group. Joel began their teaching career as an Assistant Professor at the Air Force Institute of Technology, teaching graduate courses in computer science and advising thesis research.

Joel Young's education history starts in 1986 when they earned a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Computer Science from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. In 1991, they completed Basic Communications Officer Training at the Air Education and Training Command. Following that, in 1995, they pursued a Master of Science (MS) degree in Computer Science from the U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology. In 1999, they simultaneously attended Brown University to obtain a PhD in Computer Science and the Air Education and Training Command for Advanced Communications-Computer Officer Training related to Computer Systems/Telecommunications. Joel's education journey concludes with these qualifications.

Apart from their formal education, Joel Young has also acquired several certifications. Notably, in 2018, they completed a course on Managing High Potentials offered by LinkedIn. In subsequent years, they obtained certifications in various fields such as Unconscious Bias, Product Marketing Foundations, Powerless to Powerful: Taking Control, Developing Executive Presence, Helvetica, Jeff Weiner on Establishing a Culture and a Plan for Scaling, Jeff Weiner on Managing Compassionately, Strategic Thinking, Modeling Courageous Leadership: Intelligent Disobedience, and Become a Chief of Staff with Brian Rumao.
