Charles Smith

Charles Smith is a seasoned professional with extensive experience in heritage conservation and policy development. Currently serving as Policy Director at Historic England since May 2013, Charles has held various leadership roles, including Head of Investment and Head of Region for North East and Yorkshire. Prior to Historic England, Charles was Team Leader for Conservation and Design at Kirklees Council and contributed to the Diocese of London as Head of the Care of Churches Team and Conservation Officer. An early career at The Victorian Society as Churches Officer laid the groundwork for a robust expertise in heritage issues. Academic credentials include a Master of Arts in British History and a Bachelor of Arts in History with Roman Civilisation, both from the University of Leeds.
