Mr. Stephen M. Nelson is Vice President and Assistant Secretary of H&K Group, Inc. (H&K), one of the Mid-Atlantic Region’s largest privately owned and operated heavy civil contracting and construction materials companies. Stephen is also is Human Resource Director and Risk and Safety Manager for H&K, which will celebrate a half-century of business excellence in 2018.
Stephen is the son-in-law of Lee S. Detwiler, retired Vice President, Controller and founding partner of H&K. Stephen entered the corporation in 1988 and through the years has continued to establish himself as a natural leader, critical forward thinker, articulate communicator, and man of intense business intellect and focus.
Stephen entered the corporation soon after college and quickly immersed himself in H&K work fundamentals both on the field and back office sides of the business. In order to grasp a working knowledge of the contracting side of the operation, Stephen initially worked as a general laborer, from this point, Stephen then moved on to the materials side of the business where he focused on point-of-sale at many of the company’s scale house locations. Stephen then turned his focus to the back office segment of the company and quickly absorbed himself into the financial aspects of the operation and spent valuable time in Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, Cost Accounting, Time Keeping, Archive Management, Cash Management, Information Technology, and Office Supply Management. Having absorbed both the financial and overall management aspects of the corporation, Stephen was well-positioned to assume his post as Chief Financial Officer in 2007. In 2013 Stephen took on the role of Risk and Safety and soon after the role of Human Resource Director. Stephen has continued to prove himself as a truly capable financial and operations leader for the corporation.
Stephen states his life and business mission to be one of continued, focused commitment to helping family, friends, youth, and co-workers achieve their full potential. Stephen states that he will strive to achieve this end by encouraging people to seek faith as a means of breaking down their own personal barriers, in an effort to create a true sense of self-confidence and self-esteem.
