Ashley Southerland

Ashley Southerland has worked in a variety of roles in the legal field. Ashley began their career in 2010 as a Student Intern for the Capital Punishment Clinic, Cornell Death Penalty Project. Ashley then worked as a Legal Intern for the American Bar Association - Criminal Justice Section and a Full-time Legal Extern for the Center for Children's Law and Policy. In 2011, Southerland held a Legal Extern position at Attorneys for Children and worked as a Judicial Law Clerk for the Hon. Jillyn K. Schulze, Magistrate Judge at the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. Ashley also served as a Judicial Law Clerk for the Hon. Charles R. Wilson at the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. In 2015, Southerland was a Loaned Associate (Secondee) in the Housing Unit of the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia. From 2013 to 2018, they held the roles of Health Care Counsel and Commercial Litigation and Health Care Associate at Crowell & Moring LLP. Most recently, Southerland has been the Senior Assistant General Counsel, Digital Technology & Innovation and Assistant General Counsel, Digital at the American Medical Association since 2018. In 2022, they will become the Vice President, Deputy General Counsel at Homeward.

Ashley Southerland obtained their Bachelor of Arts, with Distinction in Sociology from Duke University between 2004 and 2008. Ashley then attended Cornell Law School between 2008 and 2011, where they earned their J.D. in Law. Following their graduation, Ashley obtained certifications from the District of Columbia Bar in May 2014, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit Bar in August 2013, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit Bar in May 2012, the United States District Court for the District of Maryland Bar in May 2012, and the New York State Bar in January 2012.
