Rhonda Sweeney is an accomplished professional with extensive experience in the arts and corporate sectors. Currently serving as a Patron Council Member at the University of Houston's Friends of Moores School of Music, Rhonda has held the position of District Director for the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition in Houston since 2011, where responsibilities include planning vocal auditions and fundraising initiatives. Rhonda has been actively involved with the Houston Grand Opera since 1988, taking on roles such as Volunteer - Guild, Trustee, and Chair of the Laureate Society Council, focusing on fundraising, strategic planning, and community engagement. Additionally, Rhonda has been Chair of the Nominating Committee for Opera Volunteers International since 2017, promoting volunteerism in opera. Rhonda's prior experience includes a long tenure as an IT Executive at ExxonMobil, complemented by an M.B.A. from the University of Houston and a B.S. in Mathematics with Honors from Oklahoma State University.

Since its inception in 1955, Houston Grand Opera has grown from a small regional organization into an internationally renowned opera company. HGO enjoys a reputation for commissioning and producing new works, including 61 world premieres and seven American premieres since 1973. In addition to producing and performing world-class opera, HGO contributes to the cultural enrichment of Houston and the nation through a diverse and innovative program of performances, community events, and education projects that reaches the widest possible public. HGO has toured extensively, including trips to Europe and Asia, and has won a Tony, two Grammy awards, and two Emmy awards—the only opera company to have won all three honors.
