Stephen Silas was named the 14th head coach in Houston Rockets history on November 1, 2020. This season marks his first as a head coach after 19 seasons as an assistant, most recently on Rick Carlisle’s staff with Dallas. Silas’ first stint as an assistant coach was with the original Charlotte Hornets in 2000-01. At the time, he was the youngest assistant coach in the league at age 27.
When Silas joined the Mavs for the 2018-19 season, he was tasked with helping improve their offense. In 2019-20, Dallas recorded the highest offensive rating in NBA history. The Mavericks averaged 15.1 3-pointers made, marking the most by any team in league history besides the Rockets. Dallas also ranked second in the NBA in fewest turnovers (12.7 tpg) and tied for third in assist-toturnover ratio (1.94).
Prior to joining Dallas, Silas spent eight seasons with Charlotte, including as their associate head coach in 2017-18. As a member of Steve Clifford’s staff in 2015-16, Silas helped the Hornets post their highest win total over the past 18 seasons.
Silas spent four-and-a-half seasons as an assistant Coach with Golden State from 2006-10 and worked with Hall of Fame coach and offensive guru Don Nelson. In the First Round of the 2007 playoffs, the eighth-seeded Warriors upended the first-seeded Mavericks, who posted a league-best 67 wins. Silas was on also on Golden State's staff during Stephen Curry's first season and a half in the NBA.
Upon graduation from Brown University in 1996, where he played four seasons for the Bears basketball team, Silas spent three years as the assistant director of the National Basketball Retired Players Association. He then became a scout with Charlotte in 1999 before eventually joining his father Paul Silas’ coaching staff with the Hornets. In 2003-04 Paul became head coach of Cleveland with Stephen serving as an assistant coach for two seasons, coinciding with the start of LeBron James’ career.
The Silases are the fifth father-son duo to have been head coaches in the NBA, joining Bernie and J.B. Bickerstaff, Brendan and Michael Malone, Bill and Eric Musselman, and Flip and Ryan Saunders.
Silas and his wife, Keryl, have two daughters, Kyler Elyse and Kaelyn.
