Kayla Lowney McDonough, CPC, CPMA, CEMC

Kayla Lowney McDonough has over 10 years of experience in medical coding and billing. Kayla started their career in 2010 as a Billing Specialist at Alert Ambulance Service, Inc. In 2010, they also worked as a Billing and Coding Coordinator at Southcoast Health System & Southcoast Hospitals Group.

In 2012, Kayla joined Boston Children's Hospital as a Cardiology Coding Specialist. Kayla'sresponsibilities included ICD-9 and CPT coding for various cardiology procedures, charge reviews, and insurance denial corrections. Kayla also assisted in the development and implementation of a new billing system.

From 2014 to 2015, Kayla worked at Massachusetts General Hospital as a Compliance Analyst and Applications Administrator. In this role, they performed internal audits, provided billing and coding education to providers, and worked with departments to evaluate potential risk. Kayla also acted as the lead for the auditing application MDaudit.

Kayla returned to Boston Children's Hospital in 2014 as a Cardiology Coding Consultant. Kayla then became a Cardiovascular Surgery Professional Coder in 2015. Kayla'sresponsibilities included accurate coding and documentation for cardiovascular surgery procedures.

Currently, Kayla is the owner of Wanderlust Vintage, a business they started in 2021. Kayla sells vintage items and provides customer service.

In 2023, Kayla will be joining HRI Hospital as a Behavioral Health Coding Consultant.

Kayla Lowney McDonough, CPC, CPMA, CEMC has an extensive education history in the healthcare field. Kayla began their educational journey at Bristol Community College in 2008, where they studied Medical Assisting. Kayla then continued their studies in 2009 and delved into Medical Billing and Coding at the same institution.

In 2010, Kayla pursued a degree in Health Information Management at Bristol Community College, which they successfully completed in 2016, earning an Associate in Science degree. Additionally, they obtained a Medical Coding Certificate from Bristol Community College, although the exact year of completion is unknown.

To further enhance their professional qualifications, Kayla has obtained several certifications from reputable institutions within the industry. In 2009, they became a Certified Medical Assistant through the American Association of Medical Assistants. Subsequently, they received the Certified Professional Coder designation from the AAPC in December 2013. Recognizing the importance of staying updated with industry practices, they obtained the Certificate of ICD-10-CM Proficiency in January 2015.

Kayla's commitment to professional growth and expertise is evident through their acquisition of additional certifications. In June 2017, they became a Certified Evaluation and Management Coder through the AAPC. Kayla'sdedication to advancing their skills continued, leading their to attain the prestigious Certified Professional Medical Auditor credential from the AAPC in October 2018.
