David Payton

Principal Research Scientist at HRL Laboratories

David Payton has a diverse work experience in various companies. David started their career as a Software engineer at Lisp Machine Inc in 1980 and later became a Member of Technical Staff at LMI, Lisp Machine Inc in 1981. In 1979, they joined Hughes Aircraft Company as a Member of Technical Staff, where they developed parallelized modeling software for a communications systems simulator and performed assembly language programming. From 1982 to 1993, they worked at Hughes Research Labs, where they held roles such as Section Head / Department Head and Member of Technical Staff. David supervised projects in autonomous unmanned ground vehicles, developed intelligent reasoning and behavior-based control software, and invented a multi-agent approach to decentralized fault-tolerant control. Since 1993, David has been working for HRL Laboratories, where they have held positions such as Senior Research Scientist, Department Manager, and Principal Research Scientist. David has led various projects, secured funding from organizations like DARPA, Raytheon, and Boeing, and developed expertise in areas such as deep neural networks, cyber-security for automobiles, and distributed sensor networks.

David Payton attended UCLA from 1975 to 1979, where they earned their Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. Later, from 1980 to 1981, they pursued their Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
