Geert Kops has a diverse and extensive work experience in the field of developmental biology, stem cell research, and medical oncology. Geert currently serves as the Director of the Hubrecht Institute for Developmental Biology and Stem Cell Research since September 2023. Prior to this, they held the role of Senior Group Leader at the same institute since October 2015.

Geert Kops also has a significant tenure at UMC Utrecht, where they started as an Assistant Professor in 2005, then became an Associate Professor from 2006 to 2011, and finally served as a Professor and the Head of the laboratory of Medical Oncology. Their research at UMC Utrecht focused on the contribution of errors in the distribution of chromosomes during cell division to the development of cancer.

Additionally, Geert Kops has played a leadership role in the field of cancer research as the Head of Oncode Institute, a research institute dedicated to understanding cancer at a fundamental level and translating that knowledge into practice. Geert served as the Scientific Director from June 2018 to September 2023 and also held the position of Head of Oncode Institute from September 2020 to September 2023.

Before their professional roles at UMC Utrecht and Oncode Institute, Geert Kops gained valuable experience as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research from 2002 to 2004 and as a PhD student at Universiteit Utrecht from 1997 to 2001.

Geert Kops earned a VWO from Rijksscholengemeenschap/Orduynen College 's Hertogenbosch in the years 1986 to 1992. Geert then completed a Drs (doctorandus) degree in Biology/Biological Sciences, General from Utrecht University from 1992 to 1997. Finally, they obtained a PhD in Molecular Tumor Cell Biology from Utrecht University from 1997 to 2001.
