Courtnay Avant has a diverse work experience in the legal and nonprofit sectors. Courtnay currently serves as a Legislative Counsel at the Human Rights Campaign since March 2019. Prior to that, they worked as a Senior Associate Analyst at StateScape from October 2016 to March 2019. Courtnay also gained experience as a Legislative Intern at Project Vote, where they tracked and analyzed legislative bills, conducted research on election policy, and created media content. Courtnay further interned as a Legal Intern at Workplace Fairness, Association of American Medical Colleges, and Legal Services of Northern Virginia, where they worked on legal content creation, researched workplace issues, and investigated complex legal issues for low-income individuals. Additionally, Courtnay served as a Special Education Law Clerk at Public Defender Service, advocating for special accommodations for students with disabilities. Courtnay began their career as a Special Education Instructional Assistant at Roanoke City Public Schools, providing individual-based instruction and support to students with learning disabilities.
Courtnay Avant obtained a Bachelor's Degree in History from Virginia Tech, where they studied from 2010 to 2013. After completing their undergraduate studies, they attended George Mason University - Antonin Scalia Law School from 2013 to 2016 to pursue a Doctor of Law (J.D.) degree, specializing in Juris Doctor. In August 2016, Courtnay Avant obtained a Duolingo Spanish Fluency certification at the intermediate level from Duolingo.
