Melanie Murphy has extensive work experience in various organizations and roles related to safety, security, and development. Melanie is currently serving as the Director of Physical Security at Human Rights Watch since February 2021. Prior to this, from May 2015 to February 2021, they worked as the Safety and Security Lead at CARE Canada. Melanie also held the position of Security and Health Advisor at Cuso International from October 2012 to May 2015. Before that, they worked at GOAL Sierra Leone as the Assistant Country Director-Systems / Acting Country Director from March 2012 to September 2012. Additionally, they have worked at FAR Sudan in multiple roles such as Acting Country Director, Assistant Country Director-Operations, Camp Coordinator, and Funding Coordinator from October 2010 to December 2011. Melanie also served as an Early Recovery/Livelihoods Project Manager at FAR Sudan from September 2008 to October 2009. Earlier in their career, they worked as the Disaster Risk Reduction Assistant Program Manager at Emmanuel International from July 2007 to June 2008. Furthermore, they gained experience as a Program Facilitator at Cuernavaca Centre for Intercultural Dialogue on Development (CCIDD) from September 2004 to August 2005 and as a Volunteer at Kalighat-Mother Teresa's Hospice Centre from April 2003 to March 2004.
Melanie Murphy (she/her) holds a Master's degree in Conflict Studies from St Paul University, which they obtained from 2013 to 2015. Prior to that, they completed a Post Graduate Diploma in International Project Management at Humber College Institute of Advanced Learning and Technology from 2006 to 2007. Melanie's undergraduate education includes a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Development Studies from Queen's University, completed from 1999 to 2003.
