Tim Butler obtained his PhD in 2003 at the University of Melbourne, Australia on the topic of the global atmospheric methane budget. After several years of research experience at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz, Germany, he joined the IASS Potsdam to lead a research group with a focus on air pollution modelling. In 2017, he was appointed guest professor at the Freie Universität Berlin in the Faculty of Geosciences.

The Institute’s central research topics are global sustainability policy and new governance models, especially with regard to democratic institutions and decision-making processes, innovative solutions for future energy systems, sustainable resource consumption, and the challenges facing our Earth system as a result of climate change and air pollution.
