John Choptiany

John Choptiany PhD is a climate adaptation expert currently serving at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) since January 2025, and is co-founder and co-CEO of FARMBETTER, a social enterprise aimed at enhancing climate resilience for smallholders through a digital platform across eight countries. Prior experience includes leadership roles at iDE where John managed technical programs across twelve countries, and at Palladium, overseeing performance on a portfolio of projects in various countries with funding totaling around £40 million. John's consultancy work with FAO involved managing significant climate adaptation projects, and prior to that, John directed independent environmental consulting initiatives. Academic qualifications include an Interdisciplinary PhD from Dalhousie University focused on environmental science and engineering, alongside master's and bachelor's degrees in resource and environmental management and geology respectively, complemented by credentials in energy innovation and international development.
