Phillip Serna

Phillip Serna serves as an Instructor of Double Bass at Elgin Community College since August 2024 and holds a position as Viola da Gamba, Violone, and Baroque Bass instructor at Just Bach since September 2023. Currently acting as Principal Double Bass for the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra, Phillip has been a freelance musician since 2000, performing and teaching on double bass and violone, as well as viola da gamba. In addition to teaching double bass and viola da gamba at Valparaiso University since August 2008, Phillip also coaches chamber music and is faculty for various music camps and festivals, including OPUS Chamber Music Camp, Whitewater Early Music Festival, and the Chicago Bass Festival. Phillip has earned advanced degrees in music performance from Northwestern University and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, culminating in a Doctor of Music degree in double bass and viola da gamba.
