Broes Laekeman is a PhD student at the Instituut voor Landbouw, Visserij- en Voedingsonderzoek (ILVO) since November 2022, focusing on the development and implementation of artificial intelligence systems to enhance efficiency and sustainability in vertical horticulture. Previous experience includes a temporary position as an Ambulancier NDLZ at H-Ambu, and serving as a secondary school teacher in mathematics, natural sciences, STEM, and biology at Sint-Jozef Sint-Pieter from September 2021 to June 2022. Broes Laekeman has also conducted master theses on topics such as automated infant incubators and sustainable lunar agriculture at KCMC and ZHAW, respectively. Educational qualifications span multiple degrees from Ghent University and Vrije Universiteit Brussel, culminating in a Master of Education with a focus on Science and Technology.

Flanders Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (ILVO) researches the entire food chain, from primary food production to food processing and also the social and economic aspects of agriculture and fisheries.
