ZhiYu Chen

Principal Algorithm and Computer Vision Engineer at Image Sensing Systems

ZhiYu Chen has a comprehensive background in algorithm and computer vision engineering, with a focus on image analysis, machine learning, and metrology applications. They have held positions at various companies and research institutions, including Image Sensing Systems, Inc., Seagate Technology, The Ohio State University Medical Center, Sandia National Laboratories, University of Tennessee, and Tetra-Pak (Suisse).

At Image Sensing Systems, Inc., ZhiYu currently serves as a Principal Algorithm and Computer Vision Engineer. Prior to this, they worked at Seagate Technology as a Sr. Algorithm and Computer Vision Engineer, where they conducted research and development in computer vision, image analysis, and machine learning algorithms for inspecting and assuring the quality of hard disk drive components.

ZhiYu also held a position as a Postdoctoral Researcher at The Ohio State University Medical Center, where they focused on researching and developing new algorithms and software related to magnetic-resonance-based imaging techniques. Additionally, they served as a Consultant at Sandia National Laboratories, where they contributed to the development of the Gray-Level Grouping technique for contrast enhancement of digital images.

Their early career included roles as a Research Assistant at the University of Tennessee, where they specialized in image processing and computer vision. During this time, they invented a novel image contrast enhancement technique called gray-level grouping (GLG). They also worked as a Research Assistant in the field of plasma science and engineering, developing impedance matching circuitry and circuit models for One Atmosphere Uniform Glow Discharge Plasma reactors.

ZhiYu began their career as a Research Intern at Tetra-Pak (Suisse), where they gained valuable research experience.

ZhiYu Chen obtained a Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree in Engineering Physics from Tsinghua University in the years 1989 to 1994. Subsequently, from 1994 to 1997, ZhiYu pursued a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Engineering Physics from the same institution. In 1997, ZhiYu further advanced their education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where they completed a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Electrical Engineering between 1997 and 2003. Eventually, ZhiYu Chen earned a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in the years 2003 to 2009.
