Maria Castrillo has a diverse work experience in the field of archives and libraries. Maria is currently a Member of the Expert Group on Research Services and Outreach at ICA International Council on Archives. In 2022, they served as a Peer Review College Member at Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). Prior to that, they held the position of Head of Collections Access and Research at Imperial War Museums in 2021. Maria Castrillo attended Universidad Complutense de Madrid from 1986 to 1991, where they obtained a Bachelor's degree in Geography and History. In 1991-1992, they pursued a Master's degree in History and also completed a Certificate of Pedagogical Aptitude in Teaching/Education during the same period. Later, from 1992 to 1997, Maria completed their Ph.D. in Mediaeval History at the same university.

In 2004-2008, Maria attended Aberystwyth University and earned a Master of Science in Economic History with a specialization in Archives/Archival Administration.
