Maria Castrillo has a diverse work experience in the field of archives and libraries. Maria is currently a Member of the Expert Group on Research Services and Outreach at ICA International Council on Archives. In 2022, they served as a Peer Review College Member at Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). Prior to that, they held the position of Head of Collections Access and Research at Imperial War Museums in 2021. Maria was also involved in the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) as a member of the Rare Books and Special Collections Standing Committee starting in 2019. From 2017 to 2022, they served as a Board Member at ARCHIVES AND RECORDS ASSOCIATION (UK AND IRELAND). Maria'sprevious experience includes working at the University of London as the Head of Special Collections and Engagement at Senate House Library from 2016 to 2021. Before that, they held the role of Curator of Political Collections at the National Library of Scotland from 2007 to 2016. Maria's early career involved roles such as Archives Assistant at Falkirk Council Archives from 2003 to 2007, Spanish Language Tutor at City of Edinburgh Council from 2002 to 2003, and working at Edinburgh City Libraries as part of the Morningside Library from 2002 to 2003.

Maria Castrillo attended Universidad Complutense de Madrid from 1986 to 1991, where they obtained a Bachelor's degree in Geography and History. In 1991-1992, they pursued a Master's degree in History and also completed a Certificate of Pedagogical Aptitude in Teaching/Education during the same period. Later, from 1992 to 1997, Maria completed their Ph.D. in Mediaeval History at the same university.

In 2004-2008, Maria attended Aberystwyth University and earned a Master of Science in Economic History with a specialization in Archives/Archival Administration.
