William Shughart has had an extensive career in academia and research. William is currently serving as the Research Director and Senior Fellow at The Independent Institute since 2013. Prior to this role, they worked as the J. Fish Smith Professor in Public Choice at Utah State University from 2011. William also held the position of F. A. P. Barnard Distinguished Professor of Economics at the University of Mississippi from 2006 to 2011. Before that, they were the Robert M. Hearin Professor of Economics and Professor of Economics and Holder of the Self Chair of Free Enterprise at the University of Mississippi from 1998 to 2006. William has also worked as an Associate Professor of Economics at George Mason University from 1985 to 1988 and as an Assistant/Associate Professor of Economics at Clemson University from 1983 to 1985. Additionally, they worked as a Staff Economist/Special Assistant to the Director of the Bureau of Economics at the Federal Trade Commission from 1979 to 1983 and as a Visiting Lecturer at The University of Arizona from 1978 to 1979.
William Shughart completed their education at Texas A&M University. William obtained a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Economics from 1965 to 1969. Following this, they pursued a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Economics from 1969 to 1970. Finally, they attained a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Economics from Texas A&M University between 1975 and 1978.
