John Helling has a diverse work experience in the library field. John served as the Chief Public Services Officer and later the Interim Chief Executive Officer at the Indianapolis Marion County Public Library. John then took on the role of Chief Impact Officer/Deputy Director at the Hamilton East Public Library. Prior to these positions, they were the Associate Director for System-wide Services at the Johnson County Library. John also worked as a Book Reviewer for Library Journal and as a Mid-Career Professional Development Grantee for the Fulbright Scholars Program. In addition, they served as the President of the Greene County Literacy Coalition and as the Library Director at the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County (IN) Public Library. John gained teaching experience as an Adjunct Instructor at Indiana University. Earlier in their career, they worked as a Senior Librarian at the New York Public Library.

John Helling earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Indiana University, where they attended from 2000 to 2004. John then pursued further education at the same university and obtained a Master's degree in Library Science from 2004 to 2006.
