Johan Vekemans

Johan Vekemans is an accomplished professional in the field of vaccine development and clinical research, currently serving as the Lassa Vaccine Project Lead ad Interim and Clinical Lead at IAVI since November 2021. Prior positions include Global Clinical Head for the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine at AstraZeneca and Medical Officer at the World Health Organization. Johan provided medical and scientific leadership in malaria vaccine development during a decade at GSK Vaccines and has a strong foundation in pediatric medicine and epidemiology. Academic qualifications include a Master's degree in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, a Tropical Medicine degree from the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, an MD, and a Pediatrician degree from Université libre de Bruxelles, along with a PhD in Vaccine Immunology from the same institution. Research experience includes tuberculosis vaccine candidate development and immune response characterization during early life vaccine studies.
