Gilbert Kokwaro

Gilbert Kokwaro is a researcher of clinical pharmacology and health systems, and a professor of health systems research at the Institute of Healthcare Management, Strathmore University, Kenya.

Kokwaro is a fellow of the African Academy of Sciences, a fellow of the Kenya National Academy of Sciences, and was the founding director (2008-2014) of the Consortium for National Health Research. He was a visiting professor of pharmacology and therapeutics at the University of Liverpool, UK (1992-1998) and is also a professor of Pharmaceutics at the School of Pharmacy at the University of Nairobi.

Kokwaro was the lead editor of the first comprehensive treatment formulary for HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis in eastern and central African countries, a publication of the Rational Pharmaceutical Management Plus Programme titled Model Formulary for HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria for East, Central, and Southern African (ECSA) Countries. In 2020, Kokwaro was appointed by the Cabinet Secretary for Health in Kenya as chairman of the Advisory Panel on Universal Health Coverage.

He earned his doctoral degree in pharmacy from the University of Wales and performed his postdoctoral studies at the University of Liverpool in the UK.
