Prior to that, they were a Plans and Operations Officer in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1996 to 2002, where they coordinated tasks of numerous internal divisions and maintained advanced expertise in the review of tactical operations and mission critical needs.

Ernesto Perez holds a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Political Science and Government from Stony Brook University, which they earned from 1994 to 1999. From 1999 to 2000, they attended the CHUBB Institute Executive Programming and earned a degree in Business Programming. In 2003, they completed their Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) in Information Technology from Dowling College.
